Researchers from the Catalonian Institute of Oncology in Girona
and the University of Granada in Spain have discovered that extra
virgin olive oil appears to have a preventive effect against breast cancer.
In a study just published in the scientific journal BMC Cancer,
the scientists report polyphenols -- powerful natural antioxidants
found in abundance in extra virgin olive oil -- have bioactivity against breast cancer cell lines. The article is here.

Britons are three times more likely than the French to die from heart disease, according to figures, published in the European Heart Journal. In this article in the Telegraph Prof Peter Weissburg of the British Heart Foundation described France's position at the top of the chart as an "enigma" with theories on the differences ranging from the protective qualities of red wine, or the use of olive oil, combined with the higher proportion of fruit and vegetables eaten.

It argues the turning point for this oil came in the 1990s, with studies on the so-called "French Paradox" -- that apparent contradiction between a relatively rich diet and a lower percentage of cases of cardio-vascular problems for the French, compared with figures for northern Europeans or with the United States.
Regular consumption of olive oil in cooking, along with fish and seasonal fruit and vegetables are said to be among the factors keeping the incidence of prostate cancer below international averages among the Monks of Mount Athos. More here.
Reuters report that the traditional diets of people in the Mediterranean region (high in fruits, vegetables, fish and olive oil, and comparatively low in red meat) have been linked to a lower risk of heart disease.
